Decide how rustic you really want to be when you plan a nature travel adventure and consider all family members. Remember, it might be lots of fun with the guys to drink beer and place bets as to who will make it back when a bear is chasing you to the outdoor latrine but your wife and kids may never forgive you!
Pack properly. Don’t forget essential items such as bug repellant, sun lotion, camera, magazines, batteries, outdoor gear, bathing suits, snacks, matches, games for the kids ( and adults ), alcoholic beverages ( if allowed ), flashlights, rain gear, extra dry clothes, and first aid supplies as some facilities do not offer these and often stores are a great distance in remote locations.
Plan how you want to spend your time ahead but don’t over plan. Allow for spontaneity as this is often when the greatest memories are made. Travel is meant to be an adventure so you don’t want to have every time slot allocated. Its nice to have a general itineracy set though so that you cover all of the activities you and your family are interested in. In this guide we will provide wonderful in depth details of each property and its amenities and you will want to research its surrounding areas before you depart as well.
Allow time for rest and reflection. You don’t need to zip around like a hornet to take it all in. Some of the best times on a vacation are just sitting and relaxing while enjoying the wonderful sounds of nature....hear the loons, listen to the lapping of the water on the shore, smell that smoke in the air...remember you are there to unwind and recharge.
Let the property owner know if you have any food allergies. Often properties of this type include meals in its pricing plans so let them know ahead of time if you have any dietary restrictions.
Be selfish at times. Remember this is your vacation too. Don’t spend the entire trip trying to entertain the family and forget about yourself. Trade off with your spouse so you each get some space to enjoy your stay or inquire about babysitting opportunities with the owners. Many properties even have kids scheduled programs during the day which can render you a much needed break. Travel is terrific fun but it can also be tiring so don’t get burnt out!
Hire a guide. Hiring a local guide is often the best way to see the prime nature attractions. He or she will steer you to the greatest fishing spots, most amazing views as well as help you to plan your day so that you cover the areas you desire.
Lets get technical. If its important to you, inquire ahead of time if the property you are interested in has Wi Fi and Cell Phone services. Otherwise you will need to plan alternate communication methods.
Book ahead. The best properties often book early in the season ( and if you’re lucky may even offer special then )-way before you are sweltering in the city and decide you HAVE to get away that day!
